History:	Mr. Brown, owner of a Lumber Yard in Olds built this house, sold it to W.W. Hunter in 1907, who lived in it until 1946, who sold it to United Grain Growers Company for the elevator manager house. UGG sold the house to Vern & Laverne Ortwein in 1955. Who lived there until 1969, since then they rent it out. RESOURCE Brown Residence ADDRESS 4809 – 49 Avenue, Olds BUILT 1906 DESIGNATION STATUS Provincial Historic Resource HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE Built in about 1903, the Brown Residence is one of the oldest surviving building in Olds. Mrs. Brown was an early Olds merchant, running a store and millinery company. She used this large house as a rooming house for women. From 1913 to 1925 the house was used as a boarding house for men, after which it became a private residence. Many of the residents of Mrs. Brown’s house were students at Olds College. A large two and a half storey residence, the building retains many of its original features and is something of a landmark in Olds.
